The city of Anthony was presumably named by a Mexican-American woman who built a chapel of St. Anthony of Padua sometime before the year, 1884. The community was also at one time also known as “La Tuna”, after the Federal Correctional Institution located nearby.
It sits on the Texas-New Mexico border in the Upper Mesilla Valley, on an Interstate south of Las Cruces and lastly, north of El Paso, Texas.
The population of the city was 7,904 at the year 2000 census but has jumped to 9,360 in the 2010 census.
If ever you’re in town, go have the advantage of their famous and tasteful wines at Mesa Vista Winery Tasting Room at the southernmost extension of the Mesilla Valley Wine Trail that begins at Fort Selden, north of Las Cruces. Bryan and Dawn Oakley, the founding owners of this establishment offer more than a dozen varieties of Estate Wines made from grapes grown at their Chamberino vineyards.
Mesa Vista’s wines are made and aged on the Oakleys’ four-acre homestead about 10 miles away. The first grape vines, Malbec and Pinot Grigio were planted in 2011. The Oakleys bottled their first wine, a Cabernet-Barbera blend, in 2013. The vineyards now include nine grape varieties that cover an acre-and-a-half on land that once grew alfalfa.
