Northeast El Paso is a community in El Paso County, Texas. It borders the state of New Mexico on its north. The population of the Northeast district has grown from 11,416 in 1990 to 44,738 in 2010. In 1990, Hispanics accounted for 98% of the population of Northeast El Paso, while by 2010 that had risen to 99%.
The history of Northeast El Paso is a much different from the other areas in El Paso. In 1881, the Texas and Pacific Railway built rail lines from Fort Worth through El Paso to California. A railroad junction was established in the northeast corner of the city where the Texas & Pacific line connected with a line that had been laid south from Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1910, this area of northeast El Paso was called Vinton Place after businessman James B. Vinton who developed it on his land holdings there following passage of a bond issue by local voters to provide public funds for park development between 1883 and 1888. In later years the name evolved into Hollywood Park which for decades was a popular recreation site for families north of the railroad tracks on City Park Avenue. In the 1990s, the name evolved into “Five Points” as a reflection of five streets that converge at a central intersection.
